Precipitation networks serve several different purposes like synoptic observations for weather forecasting, climate observations, hydrological observations, flood warning, etc.,  each of which may have slightly different requirements e.g. regarding accuracy and measurement interval. Not only the rainfall is of interest but the solid precipitation accumulation is important parameter as well.
